Relief in Sight

Hi all,

I want to catch everyone up on the road repair progress.

The latest is that MAYBE we’ll be getting some work done on the road on the last weekend in September, the 27th and 28th.

Joe Cruz has taken some initiative in contacting the Forest Service about getting a permit for material. After some back and forth, they’ll give us a special permit for 150 yards of material from Highway 68 between Questa and Red River where heavy rain regularly covers the road.

Carson Natl Forest permit $2/yd x 150 yds = $300

To get the material to our road and grade it, Joe has engaged a local contractor, who will do the job for $3,200.

That’s a total of $3,500. The road bank account is currently at $2,671.52, so we’re a little short. If you’d like to put in money, or more money if you’ve already given, please do.

Caveat – We need to notify the Dept of Transportation before we can collect the material from next to the highway, and our contractor is only available over the weekend, and DOT may not want us doing this on a non-business day…

On another front, Paul Mooney has been looking into the possibility of getting Llano Road turned into a county-maintained road.

Recent text from Paul:

“Got a reply from Rudy Perea which I will forward to you.
I’m still waiting on my attorney contact to get us some documentation.
Once I get something on paper I’ll pass it on to my neighbor who is friends with our local commissioner.”

Here’s the reply from Rudy Perea to Paul’s email:

“Good Afternoon Paul,

My apologies for the late response to your e-mail. In order for you to
get Taos County to maintain your road I would recommend that you
do the following:

Talk to your County Commissioner to let them know that you
want the county to maintain your road.

Talk to the Taos County Road Department Director to see what
process you have to follow to petition the county for road maintenance.
You can contact this person at (575) 737-6470.

If you have any additional questions please let me know.

Best Regards,

Rudy D. Perea
Chief Planner
Taos County Planning Department”

TALKTALKTALK…

Roger has been talking about writing a petition and counting cars on the road.

I’ve been talking about making a sign for the road, or a flyer for the post office to get more residents involved.

Finally, another front may have opened up:

Sharon at the library mentioned that they now have a grant writer on staff, and there may be a way to put our plight into a grant request… Who knows?

Now I’m tired of writing. Share your thoughts.

Thanks,
