Possibilities

Joseph Cruz and I have been doing some active research into road material and professional road-building costs.

Carson National Forest Service

Joseph and I have been to the Questa office of the Forest Service twice, most recently on July 3rd, to see if we can get some of the material that comes off the mountain in clearing roads, etc. With a permit, you can take 5 yards of material, but only 1 yard a week, and you can’t use  “mechanical means” to move the material. This means shovels and buckets… This won’t work for us, unless we can get a special permit. They said they would look into it for us.

(Just a note – because of layoffs in the Forest Service, the office is now only open one day a week, Wednesdays, and is  very understaffed, so things are moving slowly.)

BLM

We called BLM. They give permits for material that are for 10 yards at a time, but the material is at two places, one near Dixon and one near Española. Long haul delivery…

NM State Baseyard in Questa

I went by twice and talked to Barry Gonzalez about possibly getting some of that beautiful crushed asphalt or gravel from those huge piles we drive by every day. He said he’d look into it, but the chances are low, since the material is for state roads.

Ortega’s Gravel Pit – Material

I talked to Bobby Ortega about delivering road material up here for us to  move around on our own. His truck is currentl out of service, but he said he’d come up here and give me an estimate.

Cutting Edge Excavation – road-building professionals

I’ve called and emailed just before the 4th, but I haven’t heard back. These guys will be expensive, but they’d do the job right, they can give us a realistic estimate  for a professional solution.

Jason Gonzalez

Our Village Councilor, Jason Gonzalez, does roofing. I need some roofing work. I’m calling him for an estimate. That will involve him driving up here to have a look, incidentally giving him a reason to experience our lovely road…
